Will we really see an era where Lewis Hamilton will not be the priority in a team? The Brit has had an exceptional career, and he is one of the best drivers to grace the sport. But if the last four races are anything to go by, Lewis seems to be on a decline.

Many seem to think so. And that is why Mercedes team boss, Toto Wolff, has come to Lewis’ rescue while also firing a warning at the F1 grid.

Hamilton and new teammate Russell are witnessing the worst of Mercedes in the hybrid era. Both the brits are finding it extremely difficult to keep control of their cars. However, Lewis is facing a tougher time with the W13 compared to George. And if Lewis is gunning for his 8th world title, he also has to have a championship-winning car, which he doesn’t have at the moment.

This is one of the reasons Lewis has finished three out of four races behind his new teammate. While Russell’s three years at Williams might have prepared him to drive the W13, Lewis’ last few years have not! But Toto spoke from experience when he said, “He’s getting stronger, if he gets angry, then he flies.”

The porpoising issue of the W13 has also shocked Lewis’s old teammate, Nico Rosberg. “I’ve never driven a racing car that jumps so hard after the straight, when you come into the braking zone, that you can hardly see where you’re going. You then have no feeling for the car anymore,” said the former Mercedes driver.

Nico’s comments on the state of the W13 sum up Lewis’s races quite well.

Toto Wolff talks about Lewis and Mercedes’ chances at the championship

“In purely mathematical terms, it’s going to be very difficult,” said Wolff. “But we’ve only had four races, so we’re not far behind. If we can unlock the car’s potential and understand it aerodynamically, then we’re in the running.”

This is a positive outlook after a poor start of the season from the silver arrows. The 8-time constructors’ champions need to work on improving the car quickly. Now, just days away from the Miami Grand Prix, they would need to show improvements if they need to stay in the title race.
