The Red Bull world champion ended his Formula 1 campaign on an ultimate high, with a race win. However, could Max Verstappen have helped his teammate Sergio Perez in the race as well? Well, according to the Dutchman, it would not have been the “nicest way” to end the season.

In the Abu Dhabi GP, Perez was fighting with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc for the second spot in the driver’s standings. If claimed, this would’ve been Red Bull’s first ever 1-2 in the driver’s championship table. However, when push came to shove, Perez ended the championship in third behind Leclerc, the same as the race result.

After the race, Verstappen was asked if the team had asked him to help his teammate. According to Verstappen, no such call came as he revealed, “No, there was not [a team order].”

“You can possibly block, but I mean, is that fair racing? I think [that is] not the nicest way going out of the championship, out of the season you know?”

“It looked like that Checo was catching him enough to try and actually get a movement and he lost quite a bit of time with that bit of a fuss between Pierre [Gasly] and Alex [Albon]. I was watching on the screen,” he added.

This scenario is especially hurtful for Perez following the incidents in Brazil, where Verstappen did not let the Mexican pass him in Brazil.

The Dutchman believes Red Bull could’ve done more to help the Mexican secure the second spot in Abu Dhabi. However, he also believes at the moment, such decisions are difficult.

“In hindsight, probably, as a team, we could have pushed a bit more on that on that middle stint for Checo, but that’s always easy to say afterwards. At the time, we thought that we had to be a little bit careful on the tires,” he said.
