Sergio Perez dubbed himself a Championship contender at the beginning of the 2023 season. And having won 2 of the first four races, he looked like a formidable contender, alongside teammate Max Verstappen. But what could have been a fairytale season for him has turned into a horror show. And a former F1 racer has given him a blunt reality check to remind him of the danger that looms.
Since the qualifying crash in Monaco, Sergio Perez seems to have lost his composure on the racetrack. And as a result, finds himself in the shooting range of critics and fans. Red Bull Team Principal Christian Horner has provided full support and appreciated him in the media. But all fans know how Red Bull is when it comes to dealing with an underperforming second driver. Now, Sky Sports commentator Martin Brundle has given his say in this matter.
Brundle told Sky Sports F1, as quoted by Soymotor, “Red Bull cannot have Perez out of shape when Mercedes, Ferrari and Aston Martin are closing in on them.” Brundle also elaborated on why Perez’s confidence seems to be shaken. He said, “Perez won two of the first four races of the season in impressive fashion, but everything fell apart since Max rallied from ninth place in Miami to comfortably beat Sergio, who started from pole.”

Perez’s current run of showings has been detrimental to Red Bull’s progress in the Constructors’ Championship. At this point, most fans and commentators are criticizing him for not being able to extract pace from the RB19. But the former Brawn GP driver, Jenson Button, feels that the Mexican driver’s seat may not be in trouble yet.
Red Bull already has a replacement ready for Perez in the form of Reserve driver, Daniel Ricciardo. Button feels that for now, Perez’s seat might be safe, but he’s not too optimistic about the long term. In a recent interview, Button said, “I don’t think he is (in danger) for this year but at the end of the year who knows.”
