Williams Formula One, a team that was once lauded as the top dog, has been looking a little pale of late. Their last race victory came eight years ago at the Spanish Grand Prix in the 2012 season. Pastor Maldonado was the last driver to make it onto the podium for the team.

However, the team has been wrestling with an impending sense of doom ever since then. Their current racing driver George Russell has agreed to race with them for the 2021 season.

However, the team is facing some serious issues with the pace of the car during the main races. Despite not having a great car, the drivers were able to make a place for themselves in the Q2 session, yet they were unable to perform well during the race.

Claire Williams, the Deputy Team Principal to Williams Racing, is often seen struggling, unable to fill the void left by her father, Sir Frank Williams.

The team’s performances over the past few seasons have been rather horrific, having won their last championship title in 1997. Their performance woes seem to be permeating into the 2020 season as well.

George Russell finished 12th fastest in both the last qualifying sessions. However, the main race saw him scraping the bottom of the barrel.

The Briton said, “It’s a bit strange at the moment, we’ve had three races now, two very good qualifying, one good qualifying, and three very poor races, that had not been the case last year. Last year our race pace was better than our qualifying pace.”

Talking about the car, Russell stated, “Our car is very sensitive to following others and becomes very difficult to control when following others, and obviously on a Saturday you’re not following others.

“So that’s the only understanding we think we can take away from this. I feel like I just lose quite a lot of downforce and the car becomes quite unpredictable.

“The car’s very strong and feels really nice to drive in a qualifying format, but just in the race when following cars it isn’t.

“It takes confidence away from me and when I’m in clear air in the race, our pace is strong, or during a practice session in clear air with high fuel the pace is strong, so all things are pointing towards or indicating it’s when we are following and our aero sensitivity is too high.”

His fellow teammate, Nicholas Latifi, finished the race at the Hungarian Grand Prix, 3 laps behind the leader. It is surely not a good sign for the sustainability of Williams in F1.
