So far, Williams have looked in much better shape than they were in last season. True, they haven’t bagged a single point yet. However, their performance and pace during qualifying are looking much, much better.

In fact, both drivers, George Russell and Nicholas Latifi made it to Q2 at the Hungaroring. This marked the first time both Williams drivers made it to Q2 since Monza in 2018.

In addition, the Williams drivers aren’t only competing against each other.

Between the two of them, Russell has been the more impressive driver this year. He has made two successful back-to-back forays into Q2.

Despite him finishing P16 and P18 in the last two races, there certainly are signs of improvement, and his good friend and McLaren driver Lando Norris did not shy away from acknowledging the same.

Speaking to Motorsport.com about Russell’s performances thus far, Norris said, “I’m definitely happy for him, that he’s at least having a chance to be able to race with some people.

“I felt sorry for him last year because he’s a nice guy, I get along well with him. He’s a good driver. So where Williams were last season, it’s just disappointing to see him in that position.”

“They weren’t that far off what we could do. So we were always expecting them to be quite quick. In all of our calculations, we will expect them to be a competitor and people that could knock us out, come Q2 or Q3 even.”

While the Grove-based outfit may not quite be in the thick of the midfield battle just yet, they aren’t too far off. They announced that they’ll be bringing some ‘powerful’ upgrades for the race at Silverstone.

Will these new upgrades give the team the required boost they need to fight for points? We’ll find out in ten days’ time when the F1 action resumes with the British Grand Prix.
