Two weeks ago we had the eventful Russian Grand Prix in Sochi. While many were talking about Lewis Hamilton’s hundredth win in Formula One, they missed out on the move Fernando Alonso did on the opening lap of the race.

The Alpine driver drove onto the runoff area of the track before joining the pack. He wasn’t investigated by the FIA, but give a straightforward answer when he was asked about it ahead of the Turkish GP.

As the lights turned green in Sochi, Alonso pushed himself to the limit. However, instead of successfully making it into turn 2, he headed for the runoff area, rejoined the pack of drivers. He wasn’t investigated but wanted his theory to be confirmed.

As quoted from Autosport, Alonso said, “See the questions here in Istanbul. [It was] just to confirm when I do things, they have a different behaviour, and a different repercussion on the following event.”

“So now, maybe they change the run-off area in Lap 1 in the first couple of corners. I’ve been the idiot on-track for most of the championship while I’ve been overtaken from the outside of the asphalt by many people for the first couple of races.”

“Even in Austria, I remember Austria 1 and Austria 2, and nothing happened. There were no questions on the following race. Now after Sochi, there is a question. It’s a confirmation,” Alonso concluded.

A chance at redemption in Istanbul for Alonso?

Last race weekend in Russia saw the two-times world champion finish in sixth place. Now another opportunity presents itself this weekend in the form of the Turkish Grand Prix.

The Spaniard is hoping to get an even better result for the French team than the one compared to Sochi. Alonso will get to test the track in the practice sessions on Friday and hopes to get sufficient data that could help them for the race.
