Jenson Button Analyzes Role of ‘Dirty Tactics’ in Beating Lewis Hamilton at McLaren F1

Jenson Button was one of the best drivers of his generation. The Briton had a natural talent and his smooth as silk driving style made him look effortless behind the wheel. But the 2009 world champion mentioned he worked harder than most drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, on his skills.

Button mentioned he made certain changes to outperform Hamilton when they were teammates. He also stated that he always worked towards achieving high performance in his time in F1.

I beat Lewis Hamilton because I would work hard in certain areas: Jenson Button

In the High-Performance Podcast, Button revealed he was not as god-gifted as Lewis Hamilton. Button beat him by outperforming him in certain areas, including aligning the team towards him.

“For me, in motor racing, it was always trying to find the edge. My natural ability was good when it came to driving, but it probably wasn’t as good as some,” said Jenson.

“So for me, high-performance was about fine-tuning myself and finding a way to have a better performance than others. So I personally feel that I worked harder than a lot of guys. I don’t have the god-given talent of a Lewis Hamilton, but I could beat him because I would work hard in certain areas.

“Whether it was set up with the car, the engineering side of things, or the strategy. In many areas, I would perform better because I worked harder, and that was my strength,” explained the 2009 world champion.

During his time in F1, Button won 15 races and secured 8 pole positions. He really came alive in the mixed-weather and showcases his skills behind the wheel. Button mentions he spent a lot of time with the team to perfect the art of driving.

I would spend a lot of time with the team, developing the car but also getting the team behind me as an individual to support me more in the team. And you can say that it’s dirty tactics, but it’s not, it’s sports. You do whatever you can to win within the regulations,” Button concluded.
