Kevin Magnussen is the driver who triggered the massive crash leading 3 cars out of the race, including his. Sergio Perez’s car got the worst of the accident as it lost most of the front, and Nico Hulkenberg suffered damages too. Luckily no one was seriously hurt, however, the race had to restart.

Meanwhile, Esteban Ocon had contact with his teammate, which led to 4 cars being out of the race at the restart. Although Magnussen started the season clean of penalty points, he managed to get 10 within the first 6 rounds of 2024. However, the big incident at the start of the race did not bring in any more penalty points and David Coulthard explains why.

Kevin Magnussen was saved by the lap

The accident that took out 3 cars at the start of the race was deemed to be K Mag’s fault by the stewards. Due to it being in the first lap of the race, towards the beginning, they believed it was just a racing incident and did not issue a penalty.

According to Channel 4, David Coulthard explained the incident saying, “The stewards have put it down as a racing incident, but that accident was caused because Magnussen stuck his nose in and the chances of out-dragging him up the hill and around the outside on a non-straight, are slim to none.”

Monaco is a difficult track to overtake as its narrow roads leave no space for the new cars to overtake each other. While the straights can be capitalized to overtake opponents, the turns are risky considering the speeds these cars are racing at. Coulthard explained, “If that had been on any other lap in the Grand Prix, I think Magnussen would be looking at a little holiday from Formula 1.”

Magnussen is at risk of getting a race ban and luckily Monaco did not penalize him for the crash. Now he will have to drive extremely carefully all season considering there are still 16 races left in the season. However, it was Miami that hit him all this bad-will onto his license, so let’s look at what happened there.

Magnussen’s Miami disasters

During the Miami Grand Prix weekend, Kevin Magnussen encountered significant issues resulting in penalties. Magnussen engaged in a defensive battle against Lewis Hamilton during the sprint race. This was mainly done to protect his Haas teammate, Nico Hulkenberg, who was holding onto P7 at that time.

As a result of his aggressive defense, Magnussen was handed a series of penalties. The penalties added up to a whopping 35 seconds, which brought him down to P18, making him the last driver to finish the sprint race. But this was not the end of the problem.

Sunday continued the bad luck as Magnussen was involved in a collision with Logan Sargeant taking him out at his home GP. The race stewards stated that it was Magnussen’s fault and that got him a 10-second penalty for the race making him finish 19th.

But this was not all, as the collective penalties that he received put a bad score on his license card making up 10 penalty points that will lead to a race ban if he gains 2 more. Do you think the Danish driver will be able to drive without getting 2 marks on his license till the end of the season? Let us know your thoughts below.
