Apart from Red Bull, almost every F1 team went through a rough season in 2022. One among them was McLaren. The team that once fought for victories only managed to end up as a mid-table team. As the Woking-based team looks to get over with rough phase and get back to winning ways, destiny had a different plan. During the first day of pre-season testing in Bahrain, footage showed McLaren’s fragility as fans took over the internet to denounce the British team and worry over Lando Norris.

McLaren faced problems with the front tire deflector when Norris took the MCL60 for a spin. The team took hours to fix the issue with gaffer tape as they failed to make many amends on the first day of testing. A miscalculation on the design brakes left the right front vulnerable to repair as McLaren only managed to get fewer laps on board on day 1. The Woking-based team managed to run less than 100 laps as they fell significantly shorter to rivals Alpine and Aston Martin.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella opened up on the technical issue. He said as per Fox Sports, “A few very minor issues, which are common at testing. There were some short delays caused by the team wanting to reinforce the bodywork in some places in order to prevent failure. These were preventive measures, but we thought they were useful to make so we could run safely and reliably for the remainder of the day.”

It is obvious that the team and the drivers were not happy with the way day 1 of testing turned out for the Woking-based team. And fans who were hoping that this would turn around for good came out and expressed their agony on social media.

The fans also sided with Andreas Seidl’s departure from the team citing this reason. German engineer Seidl left McLaren to replace Vasseur at Sauber, who went to Ferrari. The Papayas replace Seidl with Andrea Stella.

As things stand, the Papaya team needs to pull their socks up and make amends for the two days of testing that are still left. F1 is to have pre-season testing till February 25 when a team can take part in two sessions each day. As for Norris, he hopes for more than just a reasonable performance from the team.
