Lando Norris Mocks Racing Point and Haas Over Copying Others in F1

In the past couple of days, there have been numerous talking points, from a technical standpoint. First, it was the copycat Mercedes, courtesy Racing Point. Then, it was Mercedes’ turn, owing to their innovative DAS system. Many believe that rival teams may try and adapt it, but Lando Norris assures that McLaren won’t be one of them.

According to the British youngster, McLaren has a philosophy of implementing and developing their own ideas. He insisted that the Woking squad do not indulge in copying other teams. This was a referce to the Racing Point RP20, and even the 2019 Haas F1 car, which was a copy of the 2018 Ferrari. However, he did acknowledge that the new Racing Point RP20 appears to be a fast car.

Lando Norris is aware that Formula 1 teams loften earn from each other and borrow ideas from each other. This is primarily done during the designing process. However, these ideas will not be carbon copies, but each team’s interpretation. Both Norris and Carlos Sainz admitted that McLaren need to focus on themselves and not focus on what others do.

Speaking to RaceFans, he said, “For our part, we have to focus only on ourselves. Each team learns and probably copies something from other teams, and then makes its own version, which they think is the best. If Racing Point works what they have done, then well.”

He insisted that McLaren should not depend on mimicking rival teams, and there shoud be an element of originality. In other words, McLaren themselves need to innovate and come up with their own ideas. That was why Lando Norris advised that the team shift their focus on themselves.

Speaking about the impressive Racing Point car, Norris said, “It seems they are fast, that’s for sure, but I don’t know if they have learned from Mercedes or if they have simply decided to copy them. I have no idea, I can’t comment on the subject.”
