Legendary F1 Circuit Eyes 2022 Comeback as Sochi Leaves Behind a Vacant Spot

The Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours is a very famous F1 track from France. While Formula One has not used it since 2008, the French authorities are trying their best to be back on the calendar this season.

F1, owing to the track location’s remoteness and lack of facilities, does not pick up the circuit anymore.

However, the local authorities are aiming for a comeback amidst the cancellation of the Sochi Grand Prix.

Magny Cours can make a comeback in F1?

F1 is not just about the drivers or the teams, circuits qualify as fan-favorites too. Magny Cours was a beloved track, and fans would love to see it schedule a race again.

The Mayor of Nevers, Denis Thuriot, has been eyeing a return since last year. He said “Shedding light on his intentions, he said, “I’m trying to get Formula 1 back,”

“Now I think we can play a card with Russia’s cancellation.”

Magny Cours, however, faces tough competition from several other brilliant tracks. Moreover, Denis clarified how he wants an alternating race situation between Paul Ricard and Magny Cours. He is not necessarily looking for competition and expects the race tracks to complement each other.

Paul Ricard is another minimally used race track and last hosted a race in 2018. Thuriot further explained the situation and said, “I believe that the five-year contract expires this year, so we have to talk quickly about whether we can’t make a joint offer.”

“I know they lose money at every Grand Prix, so maybe they might be fine with splitting it up over two years,”

“It’s something we advocate because if it were every year, while it would be difficult to say no, it would complicate things.” He further added.

Thuriot further also clarified that, though there is backing from the state, local authorities’ support needs to lend a hand. Moreover, the association needs proper financial backing as local authorities cannot finance everything.
