Earlier, Sebastian Vettel had highlighted the various ways in which social media has held the sport together through the lockdown. To add on, Kimi Raikkonen had also expressed a remark on social media in Hamilton’s troll post.

This gradual trend shows that social media has gained a place among the racers. Presently, Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc featured in SportsPro’s list of the 50 most marketable athletes.

The Briton and the Monegasque were the only racers from the grid to make it through. Though Lewis Hamilton’s name doesn’t come as a shock, Leclerc’s name raises a few eyebrows.

The list by SportsPro considers a specific series of parameters to determine the list. It focuses on “vast amounts of social media data to generate an Athlete Influencer Score comprising four key data points: relevance, reach, return, and resonance.

They base these four genres on the content of the user. The appeal it receives from the masses, and the number of people the content affects.

In technical terms, it translates to accurate monitoring of “social campaign effectiveness” with a framework incorporating “a range of performance and sponsorship-related KPIs, such as social following, content engagement, fanbase growth over time, media value, and the performance of branded versus organic content.”

Although the procedure may sound tedious, the program is effective and extremely accurate. Based on such analysis, Lewis Hamilton made the cut with 20 million Instagram followers.

Charles Leclerc shocked the grid with only 3.7m followers. There are many drivers on the grid with more followers on the grid. However, can they influence the world as much as the young Monegasque? Probably not.
