On a memorable day in Barbados’ history, one of the first things that the Prime Minister did was to declare pop star Rihanna as a ‘national hero’. The small country in the Caribbean finally become a Republic after shaking off the British crown 55 years after their independence. But there was one very famous Briton who not only accepted but cheered this on – Lewis Hamilton.

The seven-time world champion posted a story on his Instagram in which he wrote, “Let’s go Barbados!!! Yes!! @badgirlriri” as the video of Rihanna’s declaration plays.

Rihanna is one of the most popular and successful musicians in the world and belongs to Barbados.

“On behalf of a grateful nation, but an even prouder people, we therefore present to you the designee for national hero of Barbados, Ambassador Robyn Rihanna Fenty,” Prime Minister Mia Mottley said.

But Hamilton posting a story of Rihanna will only remind people that the two of them were a couple once upon a time. Or so they supposed.

Did Lewis Hamilton date Rihanna in the past?

While there was a lot of speculation and reports about the two icons being a pair, it was ultimately only speculation. Hamilton had confirmed in an interview they’ve known each other for a long time, but the two of them are only friends.

“We’ve been friends for a while. We get to hang out every now and again,” Hamilton said.

Hamilton will need all the cheering he can get in the coming weeks

The 36-year-old driver is on the hunt for an eighth and a record-breaking world championship this season. With two races to go in as many weeks, Hamilton currently sits behind his rival Max Verstappen by eight points.

Yet he has the current superiority in pace and momentum, having won the last two races.

But it won’t be as easy as his fans would want. Verstappen is rumored to take a new engine for the next two races, which are on circuits that can play into either team’s strengths.
