Lewis Hamilton is gunning for his 8th world championship in Formula One. The Mercedes driver is 12 points behind his rival Max Verstappen with 5 races to go. But before the race in Mexico, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff had suggested that title rivals could take each other out in the finale.

But Hamilton mentioned that this is not how he wants to win the championship. He also stated that he was aware of what his team boss had said regarding the topic.

I have never won a championship in that way: Lewis Hamilton

As reported by Motorsport.com, Wolff mentioned that the title fight between Max and Lewis is reminiscent of Senna and Prost. The latter duo had crashed into each other twice in the title decider. Although Wolff never mentioned that they would crash into each other deliberately.

“I would never give the instruction to crash into anyone else, but if they go to that last race and whoever is in front wins the championship, they will be racing each other, hard,” said Wolff.

Hamilton responded to Wolff’s comments by mentioning that crashing with Verstappen would not be the way he would want to win the championship.

“I haven’t read what Toto has said, but I highly doubt that he would insinuate that would ever be the case,” Hamilton said. “We’ve never won a championship in that way. I have never won a championship in that way, and we’d never want to. So that’s from my perspective and my point of view.

I’m here to win in the right way, and that’s through sheer skill and determination and hard work.” said Lewis.

Out of the 7 world championships that Lewis has won, he has won only twice in the last race. If both championship protagonists would crash, it would really take the excitement out of the title fight.

But both Lewis and Max have already crashed twice so far and have had multiple contacts. So it would not be a surprise to anyone if they would crash again as the stakes are raised even higher.
