Lewis Hamilton Doesn’t “Dress” Like a Racing Driver : Bernie Ecclestone

Lewis Hamilton is undoubtedly a brilliant racer to watch out on the track. The sight of him in the Mercedes, zooming around the track and smashing lap times, is a pure visual treat. However, the jury is out regarding if one can say the same about the 6-times world champion’s sense of dressing style. F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone certainly doesn’t approve of it.

Hamilton is often seen on Instagram, uploading pics of himself in what could be best described as ‘amusing’ outfits. He doesn’t seem to care, and nor should he, but Ecclestone definitely seems to care a lot.

The former Chief Executive of the Formula One Group opined that Hamilton’s choice of outfits doesn’t do him justice as an F1 driver. He said (translated by Google), “Just the way he dresses. If you didn’t know that Lewis was a racing driver, you’d never think so.”

Speaking of legendary drivers of days gone by such as Michael Schumacher, Ecclestone said, “When you saw them, you knew they were racing drivers. They were dressed for the role.”

Hamilton definitely would have his fair share of critics in F1 racing. But criticism of this sort may be a first. Nevertheless, the Mercedes man is unlikely to be flustered by such a statement. After all, he has got plenty of more important things on his mind. One of these is the chance to equal Michael Schumacher’s record for most Grand Prix wins (91).

The F1 supremo was slightly skeptical about Hamilton’s success considering the amount of radio contact drivers have with their teams nowadays and the availability of better technology and hence data. He said, “Schumi was more or less on his own when he was sitting in the car. Hamilton has god knows who to explain tire pressures or corner speeds.”

However, Ecclestone wasn’t labeling Lewis as an inferior driver. He added, “You can’t say anything bad about Lewis, you can’t say he’s not good. Would Michael have been better in this car? You don’t know.”

Either way, if stats speak for itself, by the time Hamilton is done racing, there wouldn’t be much of a comparison to make.

For the time being, all eyes will be on this weekend’s Eifel Grand Prix. Hamilton missed his opportunity to equal the aforementioned record in Russia, but if all goes to plan, he seems more than likely to notch up win number 91 in Germany.
