Lewis Hamilton joined Mercedes in 2013. Since then, he has won 5 World Championships with the silver arrows. He also appears to be well on his way to win his sixth with the team.
The 2020 season will help him equal Schumacher’s record of 7 championship titles, 6 with Mercedes AMG, and 1 with McLaren-Mercedes. In an interview with Sky F1, Lewis said, “When I was younger, obviously I wasn’t always listened to.”
I was not mature enough: Lewis Hamilton
Lewis Hamilton claimed in the interview that he had numerous ideas when he joined the Brackley team. He said, “When I joined this team, I had all these ideas.
“I looked at the car they had with Michael [Schumacher] and with Nico [Rosberg], and I was like this has got to change, and this has got to change.”
As a young 22-year-old driver, Lewis was enthusiastic about his goals and what he wanted from the team. Although he admitted, at the time I was young, I didn’t know what I could say yes and no to and I didn’t know how to be a team leader.”
“When you’re 22, you’re young and enthusiastic but you haven’t necessarily got the maturity”, he further added. Lewis went on to explain how things changed over time.
As he started gaining experience, he wanted to change a bunch of things. Moreover, the team listened to him and that relationship continued to flourish.
According to Lewis, this relationship is what allowed him to lead their respective championships campaigns. Over the hybrid era, Lewis Hamilton has grown and matured as a driver and a leader on the grid.
Hamilton expects to join Mercedes for 2021
As the end of the season beckons, the contract between Lewis and Mercedes has still not been finalized. Toto Wolff was recently reported expressing that he would like to close the deal before Christmas.
Lewis Hamilton stated that he wants to finish the season first. He says he is waiting for the stress of the bubble to pass on. He also wants to figure out how much longer he wants to continue racing before closing out the deal.
After the 2020 championship win, Lewis Hamilton will be looking to break the record of most world championship title wins. He has enjoyed a tremendous relationship and result with Mercedes.
Although not confirmed, it is certain he will join Mercedes for 2021. The only question remaining is for how long will he continue racing.
