2021 was the year that saw Lewis Hamilton pushed to the limit by Max Verstappen. Before last year, it was a one-man show in F1. The Silver Arrows ace had won seven titles, with 4 coming in the last four years. It was about time for someone to challenge the king and possibly dethrone him. Max Verstappen had been threatening to do it but 2021 was the year when he came into his own.

The two championship protagonists shared a terrific championship battle, but it went Dutch last year. However, the race wasn’t devoid of drama. Michael Masi’s controversial call sparked a debate within the F1 nation. If you thought that was the end of it all, you have got it all wrong.

Over the Singapore GP weekend, there were speculations of two teams breaching the 2021 budget cap. Red Bull was rumored to be one of them. If these rumors turn out to be true, Max Verstappen can be handed a points penalty and the title can change hands.

However, British F1 journalist Joe Saward believes it’s better to not look for skeletons in the closet. Saward, in his blog, wrote, “Some of the more eccentric media have billed the matter as an attempt by interested parties to rearrange the result of the 2021 World Championship to allow Lewis Hamilton to win.”

“I cannot say I believe a word of that – and it would be a very bad idea because some might then like to ask questions about other dubious championship outcomes in the history of the sport,” Joe added.

“If that was the thinking behind Cost Cap Gate, or whatever it is being called, then Edward G Lansdale would be proud of the spin doctors involved. Still, it’s not Christmas, is it? So don’t expect any such presents in the days ahead”

While Mercedes’ Team Principal, Toto Wolff, called the infringement a heavyweight offense, Ferrari sporting director Laurent Mekies, urged the FIA to take stern action against the culprits. Red Bull’s Team Principal, Christian Horner, was having none of that.

Hitting back at the accusations, Christian angrily said, “I have no idea what the outcome of rivals’ submissions are, so I would be intrigued to know where their source of information for these fictitious claims have come from, and they’re hugely inflammatory.”
