Mercedes suffered a big blow ahead of the Eifel Grand Prix as a handful of their members tested positive for COVID-19 and few others had to be quarantined.

As a replacement, a group of members flew in from their factory to Nurburgring for the race weekend. Lewis Hamilton, who won the Grand Prix later that weekend, took to Twitter to thank the members who made themselves available as replacements.

“There is no ‘I’ in team. You’ve all heard this saying before but last weekend was truly an example of that. When a few members of our team got struck with Covid last weekend, these guys flew in to save the weekend. 

“Thank you guys so much! #WeWinAndWeLoseTogether,” his message read.

Every single member of any team plays a huge role in the outcome of a race weekend. Considering the fact that Mercedes were down by over 10 members, it was always going to be a tall task for the team.

Apart from finding replacements for the ones who were quarantined, the team had to make sure that the situation doesn’t escalate from where it was.

But with the way Mercedes handled the situation, no further cases were reported within the team as Mercedes were eventually given a green flag to race at Nurburgring.

Toto Wolff reveals what quarantine rules Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas had to follow

During the press conference at Nurburgring, Toto Wolff opened up about the quarantine rules both their drivers were forced to follow considering the COVID scare within the team.

“Certainly not a great situation for them because you almost live like a Hermit. And that’s what they are doing. They are at home, they are not going out for dinners. They are not meeting any other people.

“Within the team, we do debriefs via Zoom or Microsoft Teams. They are not sitting with engineers. They are sitting in their own rooms. And we are avoiding as much as possible any personal contact with them.”

Following such strict quarantine rules, both the Mercedes drivers left the weekend unscathed of the virus and otherwise. To cheer the team up, Lewis even gifted Mercedes with a win at Nurburgring.

It was not just a win, but a win that equaled the legend, Michael Schumacher’s record of 91 wins in Formula 1.
