The Dark Horse of the 2023 season, Aston Martin developed a “magic bullet” named AMR23. As the F1 grid tries to figure out how the Silverstone team performed the magic trick, Mercedes has already implemented a plan to catch the customer team. Lewis Hamilton previously explained how Aston Martin being fast is a great sign for Mercedes as 50% of it is a Mercedes. However, Toto Wolff denies Aston Martin-like magic, putting Hamilton’s dream in a warehouse.

Aston Martin leapfrogged 5 teams in terms of development over last year’s winter after finishing  7th in Constructor’s Championship. Whereas Mercedes, who was expected to challenge Red Bull, fell behind its customer team. However, Mercedes did showcase a better pace at the Australian GP where Lewis Hamilton was able to fend off Fernando Alonso. Toto Wolff suggested that the team understands the car much better than it did at the start of the season.

With a month-long break before the Azerbaijan GP, Mercedes would’ve had the chance to troubleshoot the W14’s problems. Toto Wolff believes the team has a clear direction for development and is on the right trajectory. The Silver Arrows will be bringing upgrades over the next few races. However, the Mercedes CEO suggests an Aston Martin-like miracle isn’t possible. The upgrades are more about steady and consistent improvement.

According to MercedesamgF1.com, Toto Wolff said, “In terms of car development, it is encouraging to see that within three races, we understand the car much better, we have defined a clear direction where we need to go and I believe we are on the right trajectory.” Further adding, “We will consistently be bringing upgrades to the car over the next few races, which is something to look forward to. But there is no such thing as a magic bullet that transforms the car, and it’s about being realistic with your expectations. Hopefully, we will see a steady improvement.”

Lewis Hamilton’s dream of becoming 8x world champion has been put on hold for a while. Mercedes remains realistic about its development goals. However, Toto Wolff has not given up on the goal of winning the championship and explained the recovery plan.

The Mercedes CEO has instilled belief in his team, the process, and the members. Accepting failure is the first step toward success. Wolff accepted the fact that Mercedes has fallen back and needs to recover. If Mercedes wants to challenge for the title and race wins, it needs out-develop Red Bull. While Red Bull sets the pace, The German Team believes in its positive trajectory and direction.

According to MercedesamgF1.com, Toto Wolff said, “We understand the knowledge that we need to recover. We need to have a steeper development curve than Red Bull and fundamentally, we want to compete for race wins. They are setting the benchmark now. We trust in the process and in the people, and there will be setbacks. But if the trajectory is up, that’s where we want to be heading.”
