Russian F1 Grand Prix has been canceled due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict. However, the replacement for the Russian race ‘might’ just have been decided.

Twitter in Malaysia has recently been trending with #Sepang. Soon after getting viral, the trend went worldwide. A Malaysian motorsport news outlet has claimed that the Sepang Circuit committee has conducted an emergency meeting. The local Motorsports outlet said that the meeting was regarding hosting the F1.

To fuel up the expectations, even the official Twitter handle of Sepang Circuit has tweeted three tweets one after the other. They read as “Anyone mentioning Sepang?” “MotoGP or Formula 1” and “Hmm…”

This indeed increased the possibility of this Malaysian circuit holding an F1 race in the future. As most of the circuits all over the world get to host the race, Malaysia seems to be a good venue to replace the Sochi Grand Prix.

Initially, F1 had planned a total of 23 races in the 2022 calendar, one more than last year. But seeing the current circumstances, getting a substitute for the Russian Grand Prix might be a massive ask. Moreover, the governing body needs to have a check at other Grand Prix events as well, to put everything in sync.

Sepang to make a comeback in F1?

Sepang Circuit has hosted its last race back in 2017. Unfortunately, the venue had to give up hosting F1 as it became too hard for the organizers to keep up with the cost. The rise in hosting fees increased along with the decrease in ticket sales.

The Malaysian Grand Prix lost its glamour to its neighbor, Singapore. The star-studded night-time Grand Prix event in Singapore attracted major crowds as compared to Sepang. The Marina Bay Street Circuit in Singapore then became the hotspot for F1 fans in the South East Asian region, putting the Sepang Circuit way behind.

As things stand, Malaysia might make a comeback in F1. Although nothing has been confirmed as of now, it’ll be interesting to see what the F1 governing body decides. Will it be Sepang Circuit in Malaysia? Or will it be some other circuit that would replace the Russian Grand Prix?
