Michael Masi has been the center of attention since the season finale in Abu Dhabi. The F1 race director made some controversial calls in the last three races of the season that created a lot of debate regarding his decision-making. Many fans and people in the paddock have even asked Masi to step down from his role. But former F1 driver and Sky Sports Pundit Martin Brundle has defended Masi.

For the first time, fans became privy to radio messages between the race directors and team principals. As these messages were broadcasted,  the pressure put on by team bosses on Masi was clearly visible. Brundle also pointed out that it is difficult to make decisions when team bosses are howling at you.

This is one of the most unpleasant aspects of the whole season: Former F1 driver

As reported by Speedweek, the former Benetton driver criticized the use of radio messages between teams and Masi during the race. He compared the scenario to a football match where players are screaming at the referee.

“For me, this is one of the most unpleasant aspects of the whole season. In Saudi Arabia or Silverstone, team bosses even went to the race control, even during the Grand Prix.

It would be like a football coach stomping onto the field during the game and trying to start a discussion with the referee about how the game should go on,” said Brundle.

He also shared his view on whether Michael Masi should keep his job going into the next season or not. “I don’t know if that’s acceptable for everyone. Michael will need a lot of support and I think that is currently looking at whether this support is still there,” said Martin.

Well, it would be tough for Masi to keep his job as the F1 race director going into next season. If he stays as race director, his job will become even more important as everyone is expecting more wheel-to-wheel racing in 2022.
