Ferrari would want to forget their 2020 season quickly, as they look to the upcoming season hoping things would be better. However, team principal, Mattia Binotto, thinks differently.

According to him, ups and downs are part of the spirit of F1, and even though the team has been witnessing quite a significant down phase, the uncertainty gives them a chance to get back up.

The main problem with last year’s car was the disastrous power unit that Ferrari had developed which resulted in poor performances. Their extremely poor performances in races, in turn, led to a disappointing position in the Constructors’ standings.

The team finished the season in sixth place, with just 131 points and not a single race victory, making it their worst season since 1980.

Ferrari can’t back on top instantly

While the team’s fans and the team themselves are hoping to see an upward change in their performance level, team boss Mattia Binotto is being realistic about what they can and cannot achieve this year.

Binotto said, “Honestly, the gap to the best team today is very big and we will not close it next year, “But to win races, you never know what may happen during the season, during races, if there will be an opportunity, hopefully, we can get it. I do not have a glass bowl.”

He added, “ “Let’s wait and see. That is what is great about F1. There are uncertainties and we are working very hard to do our best, let’s see what will be the competitive level in March.”

 Looking to a better tomorrow

Ferrari’s 2021 season will see a new pairing with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz, who has replaced Sebastian Vettel in the red car. Having Sainz in the team would be great, as the Spaniard helped his former team, Mclaren, finish third last season.

Being asked about Sainz’s talent, he replied, “Hopefully, we see him on the podium, I am really hoping to see him on the podium,” he explained. “I think that is not depending on him but certainly on the car.

“If the car will be good enough, I think he is capable of doing strong races and will be on the podium.”

“Again, I think he is a very young driver. The youngest line-up since 1968. Normally, we are doing such a choice not only for two years. It is because you are trying to create solid foundations for the future and looking at the long term as well.

“So we hope that Carlos will be renewed and be with us as well in the next years.” as quoted by GPFans.

Ferrari has already started practicing at their own track at Fiorano, to get data and to train their drivers ahead of the 2021 season. Only time will tell if all this effort is worth it or not.
