The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix has already provided us with many unexpected and noteworthy events. From Lewis Hamilton’s exit in Q1 to Sergio Perez sticking it up to pole, it has been quite eventful. However, Mick Schumacher’s horrific crash in Qualifying 2 session at turn 11 was a dreadful sight and many, including Max Verstappen, have criticized the design of the track.

Schumacher lost control of his car at turn 11 and crashed into the barriers. The impact was heavy as it split the car into two. As a result, the session was red-flagged and resumed only after some time. The young German is thankfully alright, but will not take part in Sunday’s race. Verstappen has given his thoughts on the incident and the outline of the track that caused the crash.

Max Verstappen criticizes the Corniche Circuit

The reigning World Champion strongly condemned the design of the circuit and conveyed that it is dangerous for drivers. Speaking post-qualifying, he said, “In some places it’s very dangerous if you lose the car like it happened with Mick and go full throttle into the wall. Many straights are a little twisty and blind. I don’t understand how it was designed that way. When it’s full throttle, just make it a real straight. That is safer for everyone.”

The safety of the track is a question that many have been asking. Mick Schumacher also crashed into the barriers at the same venue during the 2021 season. The race was interrupted on more than one occasion with two red flags, and four virtual safety cars. Fans have been criticizing the track as well after a dismal crash to the Haas driver.

Last season, George Russell also conveyed that the track needed changes after his crash with Nikita Mazepin. Following concerns from the drivers, Formula 1 took action and introduced minor tweaks to the circuit ahead of the 2022 season.
