We’ve reached a midway point- a week for the Hungarian GP and a week since the teams set foot on Silverstone. This also means it’s almost been a week since  Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen crashed in Silverstone. While this rivalry is one for the ages, there is also the possibility that things might turn sour between the two. It’s safe to assume no one wants that. However, the word on the street is that the two drivers have taken the time to talk to each other about the incident.

At the same time, there’s not much information about this. Lewis Hamilton had talked about getting in touch with his contender, as it’s important to maintain respect. This might have taken place sometime this week. While a source has confirmed that the two have gotten on a call, no one knows who called whom. We also don’t know what the conversation was about, whether there was an apology involved or the mood of the chat.

The tensions are high between the two drivers. What we saw on Sunday was undoubtedly a defining moment in the fight; many believe it won’t be the last time we see this. The two fought aggressively for the lead- two drivers dueling for their game’s prize. Two stubborn but great talents laying it all on the line.

One can only hope the conversation between the two went well- like any sport the competition can go south. While it is a sight to see on the track, it would only be unfortunate if things get spiteful between the championship protagonists.

Fierce competition- nothing new for Lewis Hamilton

Eight years of dominating the sport doesn’t come easy. Hamilton has had Fernando Alonso, then Sebastian Vettel, and even his own teammate, Nico Rosberg, as rivals over the years. While few were as great of competition as the Dutch, Lewis once deemed Sebastian Vettel as his greatest competition. Vettel, who then raced for Ferrari, fought hard for the title in 2017 and 2018.

The Ferrari and the Mercedes even had an infamous collision in Baku in 2017. Although, the situation then was different. Vettel had apologized to Hamilton, and things ended there. Their rivalry doesn’t have the dominance or bitterness the one with Vettel seems to possess.

After the first race in Austria, it was clear to see that Verstappen had got into Hamilton‘s head. The Brit’s frustrations were displayed on team radio. Silverstone was just the boiling point of the previous races for both the drivers.

Journalists in Silverstone had concluded: “the shackles were off, the battle was personal and this was now a rivalry for the ages.” This is not only a rivalry between Max and Lewis- it’s between Horner and Wolff, Red Bull and Mercedes.

A rivalry compared to that of Prost and Senna, as Toto Wolff said, “these two are not giving each other an inch.” While the rivalry is great on the track, and must surely continue with respect, Hamilton and Verstappen had a fairly decent companionship off the track, and one can only hope that continues.
