Max Verstappen Stands as a Hurdle as Sergio Perez Wishes to Go Back to Mexico

Ever since he arrived at Red Bull, Sergio Perez has played the ultimate team game. He always put the team’s interests over his own, often playing subservient to Max Verstappen whenever needed. However, it seems like the Mexican driver has had enough of playing the ‘good guy’. Now, he aims to achieve his own ambitions. That ambition is the ultimate goal of winning the world championship and at stake is everything dear to him.
Having been in F1 since 2011, Checo is no raw campaigner. However, for the most part of his career, he drove for mid-table teams, winning just one race before joining Red Bull. After joining the Austrian team in 2021, Checo amassed 4 wins, delivering his best results in 2022. That was the year when everything changed for the Milton-Keynes-based team. Not only did Verstappen continue his winning run and successfully defended his drivers’ title, but the team also won its first constructors’ championship since the 2013 triumph. An emotional team boss, Christian Horner, was so mesmerized that he dubbed the current two drivers the best he’s ever had in his team.
Now, we are well and truly into the new season, and Checo’s father, Antonio, believes his son will settle for nothing but the top spot. Nextgen-Auto recently quoted him as saying, “We’ll have a Formula 1 champion from Mexico. He’s been saying it since he was a kid: ‘I’m not going back to Mexico until I’m world champion’. He told me that again recently.” [Translated using Google]

Ever since his arrival in F1, Perez has earned a tremendous reputation for two things- his consistency, and his tire management abilities. Both put him in a class apart, an invaluable asset for any team he has driven for. However, Antonio wants him to put that all behind him and concentrate on fighting for the top spot.
He said, “From now on his career starts. We have to erase all these years that have passed because he never had the opportunity to fight like he will fight now. We will start to see the best of Checo Perez. He still has a lot to give.”
