Oscar Piastri‘s 2023 debut season in Formula 1 with McLaren has been a remarkable journey of growth and significant achievement. The season started on a less-than-ideal note for the Woking team, with struggles at the season opener in Bahrain. A retirement marred Piastri’s debut. This difficult start was part of a broader issue within the team, largely due to a misguided design philosophy during the winter break.

However, the tide began to turn as the season progressed. McLaren’s successful development program began to show positive results. Piastri received his first major upgrade package at Silverstone. Marked as a turning point in his season, the improvements in the car’s performance were evident with an impressive Piastri at the Belgian Sprint. He led most of the race, ultimately finishing second. With a P6 finish at the season closer to Abu Dhabi GP, one would hope for a necessary breather for Piastri, but a nagging pain has ascertained a bumpy start to his off-season break.

During the post-race interview for the Abu Dhabi GP, Piastri revealed that his season will not be ending with a blast, but rather a sharply-painful surgery. No, it isn’t anything serious related to his hands, legs, or any major body part. Piastri shared that during the off-season, he is going to have a wisdom tooth removal procedure.

But at least it won’t be as painful as the Qatar GP. Or, could it be? Regardless, it will be agonizing for the Australian before he heads for some relaxation, perhaps down under. And deservedly so for him. Piastri has certainly outperformed himself and lived up to all the hype surrounding him before the 2023 season started. Before going onto the winter break, there remain the words from Piastri post-Abu Dhabi GP, on what was a comprehensive race for the Woking team.

Having such a rookie season, with a sprint race win, multiple podiums, and several noteworthy battles, Oscar seems to have settled in F1. Finishing 4th in the constructors’ standings is definitely a spectacular turnaround. Recall when they were at the bottom in P10 post-Bahrain? Seems like ages ago now!

Piastri reflected on his debut season. His words echoed the bittersweet emotions of a rookie season marked by both brilliant highs and inevitable lows. He acknowledged the day’s challenges at Yas Marina Circuit, yet remained upbeat about securing the fourth position in the Constructors’ Championship.

“It was a slightly tricky day today, but P4 in the Constructors’ is still a very good effort. We know we want to aim for more than that next year, but I’ve enjoyed my first year of F1 a hell of a lot. There’s been some great highlights, some trickier moments but it’s all part of the experience. I’m looking forward to some time off now.

“Thank you to the team trackside and in Woking, thank you to all the fans for sticking with us on our rollercoaster this year and we’ll be back fighting for more next year,” he said. Ending the season with Andrea Stella’s words only seems fitting,
“This is a strong foundation for the future, and we can’t wait to confirm this next season.”
