The generous man that Lewis Hamilton is off the racetrack is matched by his team’s efforts to improve our modern world. Petronas, one of Mercedes’ biggest sponsors and an energy giant, is driving toward a more sustainable future. During his recent visit to Universiti Teknologi Petronas, their private university in Malaysia, Hamilton was impressed by the overlap of their mutual initiatives.
In 2021, the Briton launched ‘Mission 44’, which would contribute to increasing diversity in STEM education. This is a cause that has been close to his heart forever. To kick off that mission, Lewis pledged $25 million out of his own pocket. Now, his efforts have caused a wide movement that even Mercedes has gotten behind, in the form of Petronas’ initiatives for sustainability and increased diversity.

After getting a tour of the entire university’s campus and its operations, the Briton was taken aback. Hamilton said, “I think what Petronas is doing is amazing. The best grounds for young students to learn what future they can potentially have and just gain all the experience they need. Petronas is so focused on the youth in STEM and just giving back, creating a better platform for students.”
In addition to interacting with the scientists, the seven-time champion even explained to some students how he plans to change the face of diversity in F1 with his efforts.

“Something that I’m working hard on back in Europe and particularly in the UK, is really trying to promote diversity and really getting students from all different backgrounds in STEM subjects,” said Hamilton. “Because our sport has not been diverse. Sometimes it’s hard if you don’t see it, it’s hard to believe it.”
