Mercedes F1 Boss Toto Wolff Explains His Partying Antics With Valtteri Bottas Amid Criticism

The 2021 F1 title battle went down to the wire in the Abu Dhabi GP and Max Verstappen came out as the ultimate champion. The last-lap forced Mercedes to cede their territory to Red Bull after an era of unprecedented dominance for the team. However, the men from Brackley had another reason to celebrate. Mercedes won the 8th consecutive Constructors’ title this season.
Team Principal Toto Wolff and outgoing driver Valtteri Bottas had a blast in the Abu Dhabi club the same night. However, the point of contention for many was the whole different mood projection from the team otherwise. Many called out the team for protesting the decisions on one hand and partying all out at the same time.

The 12th of December is certainly a day to forget for the men from Brackley. Lewis Hamilton missed out on his record 8th title and the team lost the first drivers’ title since 2014. Meanwhile, the team was in no mood to back out and there was a lot of bad blood between the Mercedes team and the FIA.
However, there was a different vibe in the Abu Dhabi club that night. The team had a fun night with a lot of enjoyment and beautiful melodies to cheer up the vibe.

In a recent interview with Formule1, Wolff talked through the reasoning behind that decision. “The choice was between going back to the hotel and sulking, or postponing that until Monday morning and celebrating the eighth constructors’ title with the team,” said Wolff as reported by Formule1.

“So that’s what I did. I tried to put aside my frustration about losing the drivers’ title. That was something for the next day,” added the Austrian.

Mercedes also hosted a party at the factory the week after Abu Dhabi for winning the Constructors’ title. Both the drivers joined in as well, to celebrate a successful stint together. In the end, the team did not follow through with its protest. Going forward, Lewis Hamilton would look to make a strong comeback in 2022 in his title fight against Max Verstappen.
