Formula 1 is an extremely dynamic sport where things change by the minute. In this dog-eat-dog competition, every constructor chases to win the title by leaving its rivals in the dust. Following this, the Red Bull sends a blow to the Mercedes by snatching its star engineer.

For many years, the Milton Keynes outfit has outsourced to gain the engines that it features on its car. However, the team took matters into its own hands and set up a Power-trains project for its future in the sport. Now, most probably, in the quest to build the most competitive package, they have signed the Mercedes employee, Phil Prew.

The British engineer has closely worked with the German team for six years and finds himself as a senior member in the ranks of the upcoming Red Bull project. Notably, Prew was the race engineer for Lewis Hamilton in the year (2008). He helped Hamilton win his maiden world title and has worked 25 years for McLaren.

As per autosport.com, “No official announcement has been made about a start date yet though. As he was such a senior figure at Mercedes, it is likely that he will have to take a period of gardening leave before being able to begin his employment at Milton Keynes.”

Furthermore, the Austrian team also signed the head of the mechanical engineer at Mercedes High-Performance Powertrains, Ben Hodgkinson. He has been part of Mercedes for 20 years and finds himself appointed as the new technical director for the raging bulls.

The Red Bull team is on the up and up by adding big names to its crew. Do you think the team can use these new personnel changes to assert domination in F1?

How Red Bull Powertrains is a future threat in F1?

From 2010 to 2013, Red Bull won four constructor championships in a row. However, since then, the team has failed to replicate the benchmark set by Mercedes. In 2021, the team found its feet back with a competitive RB16B that helped Max Verstappen clinch his maiden world title.

The Austrian team missed out on the title by 28 points. Nevertheless, they kept pushing the limits and have come out on top in 2022. Currently, they are the leaders in the constructor’s championship, with a gap of 97 points to Ferrari in P2. They aim to keep building on this strong form while focusing on the 2026 regulations.

The next major rule change is said to be introduced 4 years down the line. The MGU-H element helps in storing/converting the energy in the turbocharger in an F1 car. The said element is very expensive to produce and will no longer feature on the 2026 cars. This provides a boost to new constructors to join the sport as it makes the operations profitable.

In recent news, Porsche will almost certainly take a 50% stake in Red Bull, making it a major player in the team from 2026 onwards. This gives a major uplift to them and its boss, Christian Horner is in high spirits for the future.
