As of 2020 and 2021, there are merely four manufacturers supplying power units to Formula 1 teams. They are, Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda, and F1 boss Ross Brawn suggests that the status quo may remain for a while.

The Briton confessed that he does not expect to see new manufacturers clamouring to get into the sport. Fortunately, he suggested that this may only last until the next rules overhaul in 2026.

With the COVID-19 pandemic stalling everything in its tracks, no manufacturers are entertaining the thought of entering F1. As it turns out, Brawn believes that the status quo will be maintained for a while until everyone recovers. The new set of engine rules will be in force until at least 2025.

Owing to this, Brawn is not expecting any new manufacturers to come knocking until 2026. With the current rules reset, Formula 1 hopes to retain the likes of Mercedes, Ferrari, Renault and Honda.

So, will we see more Mercedes domination?

“It’s not that far away when you think you’ve got to do a new engine”, Brawn told Autosport.com“You will have to be starting your engine design in 18 months if you want to get one for then.”

“So with the FIA and with the manufacturers we’re now looking at what the next powertrain should look like, and I think that’s the opportunity to get new manufacturers involved, and we need to find a design specification to do that. We’re looking at what we feel is a relevant powertrain for that period.”

“No one is going to invest in the current engine, because it’s going to finish in that time, and it’s a very substantial investment to get up to speed.”

For the moment, F1’s entire focus is on finally kicking off the 2020 season. This time, nothing is stopping the 2020 season from going ahead as scheduled, come hell or high water.
