The 2024 season has already had an unprecedented amount of off-track drama but we are just getting started. Just when we were expecting some calm, yet another off-track drama is ready to rule the news, and it’s a headline that has been a long time coming. We are talking about Felipe Massa finally filing a lawsuit for the 2008 Formula 1 championship. The former Ferrari man is taking legal action against FOM, FIA, and then-owner Bernie Ecclestone to strip Lewis Hamilton of his first F1 title. However, some F1 legends have found humor in this drama, as they made hilarious remarks mocking the Brazilian driver.
As we all know Massa is claiming he would’ve been champion ahead of the then-McLaren man if it wasn’t for Nelson Piquet Jr’s deliberate crash stealing a win away from the Brazilian. After brewing on it for months, Massa has finally filed a lawsuit against FIA, FOM, and Ecclestone after the Brit’s comments last year claiming they knew about the crash scandal but chose to not act. After the news broke of the lawsuit, both Damon Hill and Heinz-Harald Frentzen decided to mock the Brazilian a bit.
The 1996 champion Hill replied to a tweet saying, “Mate, if anyone tries to take Dad’s 1966 Indy away…I’ll sue them!! #f1 #Indy500.” The 1997 runner-up Frentzen also jumped on the joke and tweeted, “I think Jacque in 97 was running illegal fuel, I am looking for a lawyer as well.”

He was talking about Jacques Villeneuve, the champion of the 1997 season. The two clearly were in a joking mood and brutally mocked Massa for his attempts to fight for the championship.
They might be joking, but Massa did get some backing. The shocking aspect of it was he received it from the man being accused, Bernie Ecclestone. However, sometimes people take things meant as a joke too seriously. This is exactly soon after his gag tweet, Frentzen elaborated.
Amidst Felipe Massa’s mockery, Heinz-Harald Frentzen elaborated on his joke to not attract unwanted attention
The internet is a tricky place. Any comment, joke, or statement can spiral out of control and can end up affecting the masses. We have seen countless instances of the same to know better. This is exactly why the German replied to his tweet with a serious undertone this time to clear any possible confusion.
He wrote, “Please for those who don’t think I am funny, I did run the same fuel like Jacque and I finished officially 2nd in the F1 championship. But to be serious this time, my opinion is that the sport we love is as good as it is designed to be.”

“The traditional rules that 2 hours after official results are confirmed there is no chance to appeal. For the simplicity sake. F1 Sport is here for entertainment. At least that was my job description when I entered a foreign country at custom.” The German hilariously defined the sport and the rules just to put himself in the clear.
