Max Verstappen amassed an absolutely staggering record today. After his dominant win, once again, at the Italian Grand Prix, the Dutch lion became the first Formula 1 driver ever to win 10 races in a row. To put things into perspective, this feat hasn’t been achieved even by the likes of 7x champion, Lewis Hamilton! Safe to say, while the entire world was at Verstappen’s feat bowing, the Mercedes outfit chose to snub the 2x champion, with a rather salty, yet brutal remark.

Very recently, Hamilton came out, in the buildup to Verstappen’s iconic triumph to diss the Dutch lion by saying, “All my team-mates have been stronger than the team-mates Max has had.” Now, his boss Toto Wolff, jumped on that particular bandwagon by issuing a very sassy response after Verstappen finally confirmed his status as one of the most successful drivers in this sport.

Wolff and Hamilton were once in the shoes of the Bulls and Verstappen. Hence, you’d reasonably expect them to appreciate the effort it takes to get to where they are right now. Rather than congratulating the 25-year-old flying Dutchman, Wolff chose to dismiss his achievements with a vague comparison Hamilton made just a day ago.

Wolff was quoted post-race as saying, “I mean, our situation was maybe a little bit different because we had two guys fighting against each other within the team […] those numbers are for Wikipedia, nobody reads that anyway.”

While this may only have been a bit of banter by Wolff, even Max Verstappen feels that Mercedes doesn’t really possess the poise and sportsmanship expected of a team with such a storied history in the sport.

Verstappen hits back at Toto Wolff and Lewis Hamilton

Verstappen isn’t the kind of guy to embroil himself in a war of words and rage up controversy. But in the past few days, he feels the disrespect aimed towards him has been unwarranted. For him, Mercedes could do better to empathize given their own glory days and astounding demise.

In retaliation to Hamilton’s comments, Verstappen was quoted as saying, “I think it’s very difficult for them to deal with losses at Mercedes, after all these years that they have won so much. But at some point you also have to be realistic, if you know it’s not in it. Then you have to be able to appreciate what other teams do. We have always done that in the years that they were dominant.”
