As Formula 1 headed into its annual summer break, there were two things Toto Wolff & Co. at Mercedes were uncertain of—their 2023 challenger (the W14) and the future of Lewis Hamilton at Brackley. As soon as the summer break started, Wolff promised the Mercedes fandom a conclusive answer for at least one of these issues. Much to their delight, he’s rumored to have honored one of them. Which is it, you ask? Lewis Hamilton’s contract.

If you haven’t heard yet, there’s a pretty good chance Mercedes and Hamilton will announce their continuing partnership at the Dutch GP as soon as F1 returns. With that in mind, what did Wolff promise to the LH Army, and how much longer will the seven-time champion stay at Mercedes?

Toto Wolff instilled hope in Lewis Hamilton as he did with the LH Army

It’s no secret that Mercedes has struggled to get to grips with its challenger in the past couple of seasons. Since F1 introduced the ground-effect regulations in 2022, Mercedes has fallen down the order, no longer competing for wins and championships. Instead, securing podiums in the past couple of years has become its aim every race weekend. Because the Brackley outfit could not help Hamilton achieve an eighth title in 2021, and his hopes have only diminished in 2022 and 2023, there were undoubtedly some trust issues in the partnership. Wolff and Hamilton seem to have gotten past them and come to an agreement.

In a BBC interview that featured Wolff, he discussed Hamilton’s contract negotiations and was asked if he’s had to persuade the Brit in any way. As quoted by express.co.uk, he promised the LH Army and said, “I think there is no need to persuade him. He knows about all the goodness, and although we struggled with the car this year and last, he will be part of the resurrection of the team.”

By saying this, Wolff not only pointed to the fact that Mercedes is on a recovery path but also that Hamiltom will undoubtedly be a part of it. As per recent reports, the Brit has signed a one-year extension with the possibility of another year being added. With the (rumored) news, Wolff put aside one issue Mercedes went into the summer break with, and as per his comments, the Brackley outfit is already working on the second. Despite the extension, could there still be some trust issues?

The 1+1 contract doesn’t look good on either Lewis Hamilton or Mercedes

The contract negotiations between Hamilton and Mercedes brought out the cracks in their seemingly strong relationship. Over the past decade, Wolff and Hamilton have become a formidable duo, but their relationship hasn’t been smooth sailing throughout. After the 2016 Hamilton-Rosberg showdown, things between Wolff and Hamilton got rocky, but they worked through their issues and gained each other’s trust. The same trust has come into question now.

As per a report by f1maximaal.nl that discussed Hamilton’s supposed new “multi-year” contract, “Mercedes can hide behind the term ‘multi-year contract,’ which often means that there are escape clauses in the contract.” Considering Hamilton is Mercedes’ most successful driver, why would it require an escape clause? That’s what caught everyone’s attention. For a driver the Brackley team has trusted for 10 years, it doesn’t seem to want to extend that trust to a five-year deal that Hamilton asked for. But it goes both ways. Hamilton could also choose to leave Mercedes for 2024 if he sees no potential in the team.
