We cannot comment on any other driver, but for Lewis Hamilton, the 2023 Mexican GP was about redemption. After being consistently competitive throughout the US GP, the Brit topped the weekend off with a P2 in the main race. However, unfortunately, after a plank check found the Mercedes W14 guilty of non-compliance with the regulations, he was disqualified and stripped of the P2 result. The Brit redeemed himself with a P2 finish in Mexico. However, Red Bull boss Christian Horner belittled the mega drive by Hamilton with just three words.

Red Bull and Mercedes have been at each other’s throats since the 2021 season. The rivalry might have dialed down on the track because of the massive difference in both the team’s cars’ capabilities, but off the track, it’s alive and kicking and Christian Horner proved that with his latest statement.

The war between Mercedes and Red Bull has been reduced to a war of words in the last couple of seasons. Both teams have been taking jabs at each other and belittling the achievements. Toto Wolff and Hamilton were guilty of doing the same a few races ago. Now, Horner has launched the latest attack.

“They had a bit of a stroke of luck because they went in very early for a one-stop strategy,” he told Viaplay. “I think in the end they would have been beaten by the Ferraris. But it is true that they had good speed and did well in terms of tyre wear, as we have seen from them all year.”

Such jibes were a regular fixture during the 2021 season but, for obvious reasons, have dialed down in the last couple of years. In fact, Horner highlighted the reason behind it only a few months ago.

The Red Bull boss was a front-row spectator of Mercedes’s dominance in the sport for eight long years. However, one-half of that dominance ended in 2021 and they took care of the rest from the 2022 season onwards. Extremely pleased with this scenario, in an interview, Horner communicated this feeling with reference to Mercedes’s end of dominance by putting the team down with statements that hype them up. Let this irony be with the help of Horner’s comments.

“We’re only 19 months after 2021 and it’s amazing how things are changing.” Said Horner and added, “In 2021, we were the challenger, we were the David, Mercedes the Goliath. They had crushed the previous seven years in this sport. We were the challenger, we had nothing to lose, we did everything we could and we succeeded.”
