Fernando Alonso is undoubtedly one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1. Famous for his aggressive style of driving, he is also notorious among fans for triggering rivalries and banter and arguably making not the best career decisions over the past two decades. Based on this, his move to Aston Martin after the team’s disastrous seasons is already under scrutiny. However, there’s a bizarre reason for his name making the headlines.

This time the Spaniard has come under scrutiny from his fans as he issued a rather interesting and controversial statement regarding his teammate at Aston Martin, Lance Stroll. The statement was indeed shocking and appeared to be out of place for all the fans. But, the statement, coming from Fernando Alonso, who has been highly optimistic regarding his prospects this season, is still shocking enough!

As quoted by Formula 1 on Instagram, Fernando said, “In Lance, the team has a driver who is super young, super talented and has the possibility to be World Champion.” After reading this, the fans just went berserk and couldn’t stop pouncing upon the Aston Martin senior.

Fernando Alonso has been a two-time world champion, which is also said to be the reason behind his appointment. Speaking about assisting Stroll, he told the Race, “I will use all my experience and all my knowledge to help the team shortcut the time that is needed to become world champions.”

Stroll has a long way to go since he’s just 24 years old. With Alonso on his side, and his boss already praising him, he’ll have a great mentor, but certainly, with the cars given to him so far, winning a race should be the first milestone for everyone at Aston Martin.

Fans react to Fernando Alonso’s prediction

The fans just couldn’t digest Alonso’s putting up Stroll for such an achievement. With Max Verstappen, Alonso’s not-so-hidden favorite, rocking the field alongside his teammate and the Mercedes and Ferrari gang, Stroll would need a stroke of luck lasting for the entire season.

Reacting to the post featuring the bold claim, one of the top comments read, in an absolutely unapologetic fashion, “This message has been funded by Lawrence Stroll,” calling out Lawrence Stroll, Lance’s dad, and owner of Aston Martin.

Lance Stroll has only had three P3 finishes in six seasons of his Formula 1 career. Can Alonso help him power through his blockers and get his wheels moving toward the championship? Given Alonso’s stature, it’d be hard to rule that out.
