“And when we go crashing down, we come back every time, ‘Cause we never go out of style, we never go out of style,” Taylor Swift sang this for a James Dean daydream kinda guy, but these beautiful lines can very well describe Lewis Hamilton’s Met Gala appearance. And Swift’s boyfriend, Travis Kelce, agrees!!

Lewis Hamilton, Formula 1’s uncrowned ambassador, always takes center stage in the outside world and never fails to use his platform for the betterment of this world. This time, he brought another twist to his Black History movement as he paid homage to Britain’s first black gardener. Lewis posted a three-picture montage of his Met Gala outfit. He wrote, “Inspired by the legacy of John Ystumllym and the beauty of his work. Thank you, Daniel Lee and the @burberry team.” Met Gala 2024

In his 5th appearance at fashion’s biggest event, Lewis Hamilton made his biggest statement yet. The black outfit was an ode to an 18th-century gardener. But that’s not all. The Burberry jacket also included a poem by Alex Wharton, a Black poet – titled “The Gardener” – that Lewis added himself while working with Creative Director Daniel Lee and his team.

During the slavery times, John Ystumllym came over from Africa to Wales and became the first Black gardener in Wales. That’s where the inspiration for his look came from. Explaining his outfit, Lewis said, “It’s Burberry. I did a lot of research, came across this 18th-century gardener that through slavery, times came over from Africa to Wales & became the first black gardener in Wales, so through adversity really triumphed. So that’s really where the inspiration has come from. I like that the thorns here are ready to show the pain through that slavery trade time.” Explaining his process, Hamilton added, “I like to get deep with it… you have to [take the theme seriously], you have to get in character.”
