The German township, a union of 9 municipalities, Kerpen is currently on the verge of getting wiped out. The bigger significance of the place relates to F1 great Michael Schumacher. Kerpen is Schumacher’s birthplace and also the place that houses the track he practiced on. Later in 1995, the future 7-time champion married his wife Corinna in the same village. The government has allotted the land for the biggest coal mining project the country has ever seen.
The mining company will spare 3 locations of significant importance in the township that houses only 12 residents. Those are Michael’s birth home, his go-kart track, and the local church. This is not the first time his karting track came under threat of demolition. Last year, energy company RWE took over the area but later struck a 10-year lease deal with the karting club. The authorities at the club then laid out their plan to renovate the track to make it capable enough to host world championships.

As per a report from Formulapassion.it, “The village is in the process of being flattened to make room for the Hambach surface mine, despite the German statutory plan to phase out coal in 2029. Bulldozers are expected to reach the town in 2024.” [Translated using Google]

It’s been nearly 10 years now and Corinna has not been able to go to a party, to lunch or this or that, she’s like a prisoner because everyone would want to talk to her about Michael when she doesn’t need reminding of it every minute. It’s also difficult for Mick is trying to make a career for himself in motor racing.”
