It has been a tumultuous time for Mick Schumacher since he joined F1. In 40+ races, Mick could score only 12 points which did not help his future in the sport. Haas decided to drop the young German driver for 2023 and now Mick is out of a full-time seat. However, he has a reserve driver role at Mercedes, which is a setback of sorts for his career trajectory. Still, Mercedes boss Toto Wolff thinks he can grow a lot at the Brackley team, calling Schumacher an “asset”.

According to Auto Motor und Sport, Wolff told the media about how Mick Schumacher will be involved in several aspects of Mercedes’ F1 program for this season. Toto almost gave a checklist of things Mick will be involved in at the Silver Arrows. Meanwhile, he also assured of providing a “safe environment” at Brackley for helping Mick secure a good future in F1.

Wolff said, “[Mick Schumacher] He can help us enormously because he has already driven the current generation of cars for a whole season. He was in Formula 1 for two full years. He knows the tires. And he knows, which problems are in the DNA of the new racing cars.” [translated via Google]

The Mercedes boss cited how Mick will be involved in a lot of simulator work which will be an enormous help to the team. Toto further added, “He’s a capable young racer. He’s definitely an asset to our team.” Overall, Mick and Mercedes can benefit a lot from each other. Toto also feels that Schumacher can follow the path of Nyck de Vries and get a seat in F1 again.

Mick may not be as disappointed to be at Mercedes in a reserve role. Considering it was also where his father Michael raced, he would rather be happy. Though, it is vital for Schumacher to capitalize on being at Brackley and try to make a comeback as soon as possible.

What is in store for Mick Schumacher for his F1 Future?

Mick Schumacher finds himself at a very peculiar stage in his career. Despite being on the younger side of the F1 drivers currently active, Mick is out of a seat. Usually, teams love to have a younger driver in F1. Unfortunately, Haas was the outlier on that sentiment, much to Mick’s loss.

Still, moving ahead the German driver would be looking to find a new team as soon as possible. 2024 is probably the earliest he can aim for an F1 return. But, will he get an option as soon as next year with any team? Looking at the prospects, unless we see a shock retirement like Sebastian Vettel in 2022; Mick will have to bide his time for an opportunity to rise next year.

While the future prospects in the long term, look a lot more promising. With Audi coming in 2026, Mick’s shot at being their German driver is a great one. Audi wants to have a German driver on its team. But, before that Schumacher will have to stay in contention to come on Audi’s radar.

Ideally, if Mick can get any midfield team seat by 2024 or 2025, it would give him a season or two to prove his mettle. After all, 12 points in 2 seasons do not sound great for a driver of Mick’s caliber. A chaotic silly season and the right opportunity in the driver market can boost Schumacher’s stocks in F1 again.
