Mick Schumacher is gearing up to race in his first-ever F1 season with American outfit Haas. He will be eased into his debut season by Jock Clear, the driver coach of Charles Leclerc, who was also the performance engineer of Michael Schumacher during his short stint with Mercedes. Mick is keen to work with Clear and admits he has spoken to him about how it was to work with his father, Michael.
Jock has been part of the Ferrari system for a while now. But at the start of this year, his role was expanded. He will now also cater as a driver coach for the Scuderia’s academy drivers. Schumacher junior, who recently reacted to Haas’ new livery, spoke glowingly about his first interaction with Clear.
He said (translated via Google), “I think the first time I really worked with him was in 2014. I had a simulation session with him, which was really funny. And very interesting to me.”

Mick Schumacher keen to learn about his father’s work ethic from Clear
The 21-year-old said, “Of course we had various conversations and discussions about how working with the different drivers was for him and how it was compared to my father. I’ve made a lot of notes and I’m definitely looking forward to even closer this year to work with him.”
Of course, when Jock worked with Michael, the latter was far from his peak. But surely Clear would have noticed how the brain of a 7-times world champion works and can pass down the knowledge to his son who aspires to follow in his father’s footsteps.

However, his maiden campaign is most likely going to be a very tough one to stomach. Haas is expected to be competing at the very back of the grid and as such, points finishes may be extremely hard to come by. Moreover, Schumacher junior hasn’t had the best of rookie campaigns in the feeder series.
It’ll be interesting to see what Mick can achieve with Haas in his first ever F1 season.
