Power Politics Takes Ugly Turn as Michael Andretti & $774 Million Partner Languish in Wait for F1 Dream

Formula 1 is such a beautiful sport. The rivalries are intense; the fans are more than passionate, and this combination makes for an electrifying atmosphere at whichever circuit the sport goes to. In turn, the money at stake shoots up. To support this, a competent structural hierarchy is necessary. But whatever you do, the dirty politics and shrewd lobbying that begins at one desk can spread and make or break careers. And this is where Michael Andretti and his partner’s F1 dream has gotten stuck.
The Andretti Autosport team has been doing pretty well in NASCAR. Maybe that’s where Andretti’s dream of building on that and entering Formula 1 originated. But it has been over a year since he publicly stated his desire and nothing has budged. The current 10 teams that occupy the grid opposed it then and they still oppose new entries. So, to make his case stronger, the American businessman teamed with $774 million worth Cadillac (as reported by Peopleai), and General Motors earlier this year. However, the latest update in their case has nearly destroyed that dream.
According to Ted Kravitz, Andretti Global with General Motors and Cadillac are close to be approved for entry to #Formula1 but adds that FOM might not allow another team in 👀

Sky Sports pit-lane reporter Ted Kravitz has leaked big news. According to him, Andretti, in partnership with General Motors and Cadillac, was on the verge of getting approved to be the 11th team on the grid. But the FOM or Formula One Group, that owns F1, seems to have no plans to let another team get into F1 at this stage.
Despite putting in so much effort and adhering to all regulations and fulfilling all requirements, Andretti has been left to hang dry. To add to his troubles, even his team’s IndyCar situation looks brittle.

After a not-so-good few seasons with Haas in Formula 1, Romain Grosjean left the motorsport in 2020 for another category – IndyCar. After racing for Dale Coyne Racing in 2021, he signed for Andretti Autosport in 2022. But after 2 turbulent seasons, the French-Swiss racer will no longer race for them in 2024.
Michael Andretti is also considering a 4th entry for 2024’s IndyCar campaign. But even that is in unsure territory right now. “To be honest with you, we really don’t know what we want to do yet,” he told NBC Sports. “We hope to have an answer by Laguna Seca. There are a lot of things that go into a fourth car, not just sponsorship. We have quite a few different options we are looking at and see what the best one is that works for us.”
