“Never What We Hoped It Would Be”: Heartbroken Lewis Hamilton Deals Brutal Blow to Toto Wolff & Co. As Fans Parade Behind Him in Support

The Japanese GP was another disappointment for Lewis Hamilton and his fans. At this point, it doesn’t even come as a surprise. The Silver Arrows, led by Toto Wolff, have been struggling since the bitter loss in 2021. Moreover, the Japanese GP exposed Mercedes’ flaws, with both Lewis Hamilton and George Russell severely suffering with their steering.
According to the 7x champ, his W15 suffered damage in a minor collision with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, which rendered his steering wheel nearly useless but just enough to get him through the race. Moreover, their lack of pace compared to Ferrari and McLaren didn’t do them any favors. Consequently, the team result was the same as their starting positions, P7 and P9.
This brought out Hamilton’s suppressed frustration with Toto Wolff & Co. “The car is never what I hoped it would be,” a dejected Hamilton said post-race, “It’s never what we hoped it would be.” The Briton also highlighted how hard it was to even think of taking any positives from the weekend at Suzuka.

After Hamilton’s bitter statement, his fans couldn’t help but support him and voice their criticism of Mercedes.
Fans trash Mercedes after Lewis Hamilton makes hopeless statement
The last time Lewis Hamilton won a race was September 5, 2021. Putting that into perspective the man he is replacing at Ferrari; Carlos Sainz has won 3 races in that period. That doesn’t portray a beautiful picture of the Mercedes star and his talents. But the source of this unflattering comparison can be traced back to the Brackley outfit’s complete and utter failure to understand and do well within the 2022 regulations.
Let’s have a look at what the fans had to say on X:

We have fallen
Need to hire new engineers— F1_MercHub (@F1MercHub) April 8, 2024
“We have fallen. Need to hire new engineers,” said a user, and his stance was backed by another who declared that Mercedes’ engineering department needs a new leader. One that can steer them to the pinnacle that the mighty W11 took them to.
There’s a miss in the mechanical engineering department, they just need a new director. Sometimes we ignore what’s in front looking for something else but don’t see what we want or need is in front of us.

One Twitterati was just glad that Hamilton will exit the team after 2024 and that Russell will have to bear the brunt of the performance drop that may follow.
At least he’s leaving. Russel gonna have to suffer

Another user echoed the previous by reminding everybody about the exact duration before Ferrari welcomed another 7-time champion.
244 days until the last race 🙏🏽🙏🏽❤️❤️

One person went as far as to call the W15 a “boat” that probably might be on the wrong geographical surface. The 2026 regulations reset might be Toto Wolff’s only chance at a revival. They could either set an example for rivals to follow or be the team that teaches the others what not to do.
