Max Verstappen is a two-time world champion, or is he? Well, that was the question on everyone’s mind, including Verstappen, at the end of the Japanese GP. The delayed start and the shortened race created a lot of confusion surrounding the points system for the race. The complex rules and regulations made it difficult for everyone to decipher.

However, when the rules were broken down, it was a bit too late. In the end, the confusion took away a moment from Verstappen. Now, this is a big problem because such scenarios are taking the experience away from the fans.

Speaking on the The Ringer F1 Show podcast, Kevin Clark, and Tim Hauraney, discussed the same. “The way that this rule book is designed is, you need a lawyer to go through this thing, to help people even understand the wording of everything. It is a great analogy you make when you compare it to another sport like hockey, NFL, NBA, where things are just a little bit more watered down, diluted, easier to understand.”

I think you need to try and find ways of distilling this, watering it down so you can deliver it a little easier to the fans,” Tim Hauraney said.

“We should not be talking about the rules and regulations of the sport, as much as we do,” said Kevin Clark. “We are always going to talking about the time that Jhonny freaking Herbert was the one who informed him five minutes after a race that he won the world championship. I just feel like it leaves a sour taste in everybody’s mouth,” he added.

These mishaps and confusing scenarios definitely cost F1 a moment. Max Verstappen winning back-to-back championships could’ve been more beautifully portrayed than an arguably awkward announcement in the post-race interview.

The pinnacle of motorsport definitely missed out on this moment. This was precisely the reason why Kevin Clark also issued a word of advice for whoever is calling the shots in F1.

The host of the podcast, Kevin Clark, also used his knowledge of various American sports to draw a comparison. He used an NFL analogy to express how, even with complex rules, the experience of the fans can be maintained.

“The NFL does an amazing job of communicating every scenario, all the time. Just saying, here’s how so and so clinches first. Here’s who clinches second. Here’s the live scenario. I just feel there was a failure of that and it cost F1 a moment,” Kevin Clark said.
