Some good news is coming in for the fans of Fernando Alonso after he was involved in a road accident in Switzerland while riding his bicycle.

The two-time world champion was conscious but it was feared that he had broken his jaw. However, with the latest news coming out, those fears could now be put to rest.

News website ‘El Transistor’ reported in regards to Alonso, “DOES NOT HAVE any fracture. He has a severe blow to his face and has lost a tooth. He is still admitted to the hospital awaiting new tests.

Fernando does not have a broken jaw. He is affected but speaks without undue difficulty. He is already in Bern where they will do a small reconstruction (mild surgery) in the most damaged area.

“Later, his lost teeth will be implanted. Fernando is in good spirits. The accident occurred shortly after 1:00 p.m. He ran into a car, braked, and hit his face hard,” the statement added.

Had he broken his jaw, he would have definitely been out at the beginning of the season. However, now we can expect him to make a full recovery and be fit to start the season for the Alpine F1 team.

At the same time, there will still be some lingering uncertainty until his team makes an official announcement.

So, they may have to look for a replacement. Test and Reserve driver Guanyu Zhou could yet make his F1 debut or at least be behind the wheel of their car for the winter testing in Bahrain. He will be patiently waiting in the wings.

Former Red Bull driver Mark Webber suffered a similar crash in Australia in November 2008. He broke his leg while riding a bike in the ‘Mark Webber Pure Tasmania Challenge’ after colliding with a car.

However, in his case, the injury occurred at the end of the season and he made a full recovery to start the 2009 F1 season. In Fernando’s case, the 2021 season is barely a month away.
