Jean Todt can very well be considered the last Team Principal who was a success at Ferrari. Scuderia Ferrari replaced Mattia Binotto after the last season ended and appointed Frederic Vasseur with hopes of improving in the 2022 season. However, as Max Verstappen and Co. eked out a huge lead putting Charles Leclerc’s title hopes in doubt, fingers were being pointed in Frederic Vasseur’s direction. What is being said about Vasseur?

After a disappointing 2022 where Ferrari’s reliability issues and strategic errors cost Charles Leclerc a shot at the championship, the Scuderia was expected to come back with a bang in 2023. However, Red Bull has been the dominant force with Max Verstappen eking out a 141-point lead to Charles Leclerc after the first 8 rounds of the season. The Monegasque had the race pace to challenge for the podium in Canada, but the qualifying blunders meant Leclerc only managed P4 after getting out in Q2.

Fingers are now being pointed at Ferrari’s new TP, who was appointed to smoothen out the operation and help Ferrari challenge for the title. Damon Hill suggests that Ferrari needs a potent TP like Ross Brawn or Jean Todt to help get rid of the problems at the Scuderia. According to Formula1news.co.uk, Damon Hill said, “It just seems this is the malaise that they perennially suffer from. It’s like, you’re not sure who’s really in charge there. It’s such a potent force in the sport, it needs the firm hand of someone like a Ross Brawn or a Jean Todt to grab it and get everyone to march with them.”

However, it is still early days for Vasseur in Ferrari. No major changes have been made as the TP is still understanding the way the team works and the impact will only be seen at the greater level later on. Vasseur also identified a challenge faced by Ferrari.

It is understood that Ferrari has a different work culture compared to the F1 team. The old racing heritage and the Italian culture mean employees need time to adapt to it. Vasseur explained that while personnel can easily move from one team to another on other teams, it is different in the case of Ferrari.

According to SkySports.com, Frederic Vasseur said, “It’s not the same situation – you can move from Red Bull to Mercedes, keep the same hours, keep children in the same school and from the Friday to the Monday you can change and everything is perfect. If you want to come to Italy, it’s a different approach. You have to change the family environment and so on.”
