Taking on a rookie in Formula 1 is a big gamble. But it’s a risk worth taking. There are always two sides to the story. Haas learned this the hard way in 2021. Whereas, McLaren’s pursuit of Lando Norris brought them only joy in 2019 and it’s still paying dividends. Williams’ boss, Jost Capito, is the latest man to roll the dice.

Williams announced that F2 star Logan Sargeant will be racing alongside Alex Albon for the team from next year. Now, this has been a hotly debated topic, but according to Capito, he has full faith in his decision to give rookie Sargeant a chance in the major league.

Talking about his decision, he told RacingNews365, “Obvious that we will lose some points, since a newcomer needs learning, unlike someone experienced. But if we look at the long term, [Sargeant] is the reason why we started the academy.” [translated via Google Translate]

Capito has his sights set firmly on the long-term future of the Williams team.

“The sooner, the better for us, because we know that we will not be highly competitive next year, so we have the chance to hire a young driver now, while a top team cannot afford it.”

An American in Formula 1 once again, finally. Logan Sargeant will don the Williams suit in 2023 to go at it with Alex Albon as his teammate. But a very important part of an F1 driver’s identity is his racing number. Well, Sargeant has gone with the number 2.

He explained his decision to Formula1.com. He began, “I used to run [number two] in Formula Renault, and I had a pretty good season that year. Number three is my number, but that’s taken [by Daniel Ricciardo] so I figured why not take a winning number from the past and run with in F1?”
