Lewis won his first-ever F1 race in just the fifth race of his career. McLaren was a strong team with Fernando Alonso, who was the double-world champion partnering with Lewis. In a recent video, Matt Bishop, the then McLaren head of PR shared an instance about Hamilton’s winner mentality from such a young age.
Challenging for an F1 title in your very first season is a commendable feat. Hamilton not only challenged his teammate and reigning world champion Alonso, but also Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen. The Finnish racer would go on to win the championship by just a single point against the McLaren pair.
Bishop shared an incident involving Hamilton after he had won the Hungarian GP. He shared that everyone in the McLaren camp was relieved after Lewis won the race. However, that wasn’t Hamilton’s reaction.
Bishop said, “Straight after the race, I remember speaking to Lewis, taking him to the media afterward, and he said, ‘Matt, do the sum, do the sum. If I win every single race from now on, can I still be champion?’ Do the sum now.”
