Perhaps not as big as Formula 1 and surely not in America, cricket is a sport that has a global following as well. However, the USA and the West Indies are set to host the T20 Cricket World Cup this year. It’s a sport that attracts fans mainly from the participating countries, and Australia is one of the biggest names in the cricketing world. Most Australians love and follow their national team and the sport with enthusiasm and Oscar Piastri showcased it recently as well. However, because of his query concerning the $10.7 billion Indian cricket league called the Indian Premier League (IPL), he’s been put in a tough spot.

IPL is India’s premier cricket tournament under the limited over format (T20) that has amassed enormous popularity and attracts the best cricketers from around the globe. This is exactly why the 2023 ODI World Cup-winning contingent of the Australian Men’s Cricket team, which Piastri celebrated in his style, is also part of the tournament. However, similar to any club-style competition, the players are divided into different teams and this is exactly what put Piastri in a tough spot.

After his tweet, “Getting into the @IPL this year. Any suggestions who I should support?” IPL’s marketing team curated a video with two Aussies putting their points across to convince Piastri to support their particular teams.

Marcus Stoinis appears first on the video, who’s currently playing for Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL. He tried to win Piastri over by finding common ground in the difficulties of both sports. Stoinis also mentioned how he’s good friends with fellow Aussie F1 man Daniel Ricciardo and how they can make a community.

Then came Nathan Ellis, currently playing for Punjab Kings to make his case. His plea was based on the fact that Stoinis has Ricciardo on his side, so Punjab needs more Aussie support, which is why Piastri should support Punjab Kings. However, after hearing both arguments, Piastri had only one thing to say, “🤔”.

Now, we’re not sure what team Piastri will start supporting with the 2024 IPL season already underway. However, it will be interesting if the McLaren man sporting a jersey like he did in the past. Stepping away from cricket for a second, would you like to know who Piastri really wants to meet?

When asked if he wanted to meet any particular celebrity, he confessed, “Good question. I think meeting Michael Jordan or LeBron James would be very cool. I mean, I have met some very cool people this year already, which has been nice. But yeah, probably Michael Jordan. From racing, I’ve been lucky enough to meet quite a few cool people in motorsport as well. But Michael Jordan’s probably at the top of the list.
