After Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney invested $218 million in Alpine to buy a 24% stake in the team, things were supposed to take a turn for the better. But from what has transpired over the past few weeks, it seems Alpine management’s minds are just as all over the place as those of Ferrari’s strategists. Alpine’s decision to relieve CEO Laurent Rossi of his duties started a domino effect chain reaction that led to the Enstone team sacking Team Principal Otmar Szafnauer and Sporting Director Alan Permane. And now they’re on the lookout for their next role.

Before joining Enstone 18 months ago, Szafnauer was the team principal at Aston Martin. Considering he’s on the lookout for a new F1 role, speculations about him rejoining the Silverstone outfit have been making the rounds. With the Belgian GP being his last race with the French team, he discussed his situation in an interview at Spa. He revealed, “Yes, as you can see, my Alpine adventure has just ended. Now I can join a new F1 team from now on. Let’s wait and see.”

Szafnauer was spotted amidst a cheeky rendezvous earlier that day, and when the interviewer asked him about it, they caught him off guard. They stated, “You were just spotted entering the Aston Martin guest house.” Seeing how the Silverstone squad had been his home for quite some time before he joined Alpine, going back might not be out of the question. But Szafnauer didn’t reveal anything and simply said, “I will not comment.”

Whether he’ll be returning to Aston Martin to continue their amicable relationship, we’ll find out soon. But one thing is for sure: there was nothing amicable about Szafnauer’s split with Alpine.

Otmar Szafnauer shot a strong message at Alpine management

After Alpine and Szafnauer’s split broke the news, it was stated that the decision was a “mutual agreement” But following Szafnauer’s interviews after the sacking, it’s become clear that there was nothing mutual about the decision. After Renault rebranded to Alpine F1, the team aimed to return to the front within 100 races. But with how development is progressing, Szafnauer and his team revealed it would take until 2026 to achieve that goal. But Renault and Alpine management weren’t happy about the disagreement, which led to Szafnauer’s ouster.

After the announcement, he said, “The reality is that changes take time. I signed some good people from other teams, but they are still stuck in their contracts and won’t come until 2024 or join the team in 2025. You can’t really push development if people aren’t there. It takes time for people to come, and it takes time for people to work together correctly. I always say: You can’t get nine women pregnant and hope you have a baby in a month.”
