If there ever were discussions for the all-timer of all-timers, there would be 2 undisputed inclusions to that list. Michael Schumacher of Ferrari and Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes.

Michael Schumacher’s era was arguably the first time F1 saw out-and-out domination of the sport. Not for a year or two, but for several consecutive years. The German holds the record for most World Championships won consecutively at 5.

Schumi also shares another record – the most number of World Championships won. He won 7. So has Lewis Hamilton. The Briton might have made it to 8 if not for Max Verstappen’s breathtaking win at Abu Dhabi in 2021.

Just like Schumi, Lewis had a long period of complete domination. And just like that, his reign looks on the cusp of ending. While it is only the first season where Lewis has not performed, the parallels are uncanny.

Ross Brawn feels their stories are quite similar. He said, Similar to Lewis with George Russell, Michael had a young team-mate in Nico Rosberg who was incredibly good.” (Translated via Google)

“Even Nico was underestimated back then. Everyone thought he was just second choice, but he was a tough dog, very ambitious and later even became world champion against Lewis.

He added, “As a driver, you always have to decide whether you want to be part of the solution or part of the problem. Michael redefined his role back then, so he was part of the solution and helped build the team that would go on to win eight straight Constructors’ titles.”

“He sacrificed himself for the future of the team, so to speak, and played a key role in laying the foundation for its success.

Brawn sees the current situation at Mercedes as the proverbial passing of the baton. His optimism is not unfounded, given Hamilton has shown certain glimpses of his natural brilliance in moments. But the lack of a new contract from Mercedes might hint at something else.

Will Lewis Hamilton not be needed at Mercedes anymore?

When Brawn draws parallels between Lewis and Michael, he also shines the light on how Nico was the next generation.

Mercedes brought Michael back from retirement. He was one of the most experienced drivers on the grid. In hindsight, the move was not only to expect a title challenge from Schumi but to provide Rosberg with tutelage to thrive.

It looks like Toto Wolff and his team might use the same trick if things do not improve. Russell looks like a driver of great quality. He could provide Mercedes with the titles Lewis did till now. But Lewis’ guidance could be crucial to George’s success.

While there are no public mentions of a possible succession, it would not be wise to completely dismiss the possibility. As teams continue to snatch young drivers with immense potential, Mercedes would not want to be last on the train. They will keep their eyes peeled.
