In the way that McLaren has turned their season for the better, Alpine has turned and gone the opposite way. Despite getting big investors on board, their A523 has not improved. Even luck is not on their side, with both their cars getting involved in the Lap 1 incident in Hungary. And in the last 2 races, Pierre Gasly has unfortunately been bumped into, damaging his car and forcing retirement. And the Frenchman has publicly shamed the team for a bad first half of 2023.

Alpine has had by far their worst season in F1. In 2021, they finished P5 in the Constructors’ championship, with 155 points. In 2022, they bettered their position by finishing P4, with 173 points. And that progress could have been the reason why Gasly joined the team. But their performance has taken a hit and they are now fighting in the midfield and struggling to get points.

Reflecting on the first half of the season where they’ve earned only 47 points, Gasly was very critical of the team’s performance. Gasly said, as quoted by F1only,fr, “It was not a good first half of the season in the end and it shows in our results. We had some very positive moments, sometimes without reward, Australia where we were fifth before the incident, and our qualifying performances in Miami and Spain, for example.”

But Gasly also mentioned some of the positives that came from the 1st half. And how the team is doing their best to make changes to head in the right direction.

The British GP and the Hungarian GP would have panned out the same even if Alpine did not take part in the races. In both Grand Prix, they suffered Double DNFs and walked away with 0 points. And Gasly got crashed into during both races for no fault of his. Still, he has praised the team’s efforts and chosen to be positive for the Belgian GP.

Gasly said, “When we manage to put everything together, we look strong, but we have to aim for a more complete performance until the end of the year. There are areas where we need to strive to do better as a team and I’m sure we can turn the tide. I’m looking forward to Belgium and I’m aiming for a solid weekend for this last round before the summer break.”
